Mrs. Annette Candelaria-Robare
Welcome Back! I am so excited to be your child’s 1st grade teacher. Let me tell you just a little bit about myself. I have work for Belen District for 15 years. I have my Masters in Education and Curriculum Development. I have three beautiful children, Brent who is 23 and works for UNM, Cameron who will be stating his second year also at UNM, and my little girl Aria who is 5 years old and will be starting kindergarten.
This year is an exciting year! I will be using a new reading program that incorporates different ways of learning sounds, sight words, as well as spelling. The program is called Orton Gillingham or you might hear it as OG.
We will be able to have three parties this year: One in October, Winter Break, and the end of the year party. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday please let me know so I can give you the best time for the celebration. Please keep in mind all food items for parties/birthdays must be store bought.
Please do not verbally tell your child if their after school pick-up arrangement has changed. I will only except a note from you or call the office a leave a message for me. If there is nothing in writing, I have to stick the original transportation in the pick-up plan, this is a school wide rule.
If you are interested in joining our schools site council please let me know. It is a wonderful way to be a part of La Merced. We do not have a time yet for the first meeting, but I will let you know as soon as we know.
Expectations: All students are expectations to be in class on time, please look at the student handbook for further information at www.beleneagles.org. If you have any question please feel free to ask myself or the office staff.
Work is to be completed and returned on time.
Dress code violation will be addressed and if needed students will be sent to the nurse’s office for a change of clothes.
If your child is absent, please note that they will have 3 days after they return to complete their missing work. I hope that your child stays happy and healthy, but if your child is out longer than 3 days please contact either myself or the office.
Behavior Plan for our classroom Our classroom uses a color card system to help students manage their behavior concerning three rules: Be safe, be responsible, be respectful. Our “How Am I Doing Today?” chart holds a green, a yellow, and a red card for each child. All children begin the day on green cards. Students receive a free reminder about inappropriate choices before being asked to “pull a card.”
❖ 1st time—Warning, card stays green
❖ 2nd time—Yellow card, time out
❖ 3rd time—Red card, behavior notice and a time out
❖ 4th time—Hot Slip
Certain behaviors WILL NOT be tolerated and will earn an automatic RED for the day… *hitting *spitting *stealing *not telling truth *disrespect *fighting *pushing
Other behaviors disrupt class and will earn yellow and red as behaviors are repeated:
*talking at inappropriate times *transition disruptions
*lack of self-control *disruption during specials *line/line-up disruptions *lunch/playground behavior
*not following directions *getting out of seat *arguing *not completing work *tattling *not staying on task in workstation
If your child receives a red card, he or she will bring home a note from me, explaining what had happened. Please sign the form and return it the next day. Hot Slips are school wide forms that are used and will be sent home, please return and sign. If a student receives 3 Hot Slips the student will receive an Office Referral in which Principals handle the consequences.
Students that stay green will be recognized for their positive behavior and if they stay green for the day they will earn tickets to turn into prizes!
Our classes are based on a workstation classroom where students are to be working independently in different stations while I work with small group instruction. If your child is not staying on task during these station times and turning their card is not working they will not be allowed to work in stations and instead work at their desks until they can stay on task or might be sitting out during their specials in order to complete work. Students really enjoy working in stations please ask they about what they are learning.
Homework and Class work: Every Monday your child will be given a homework packet and a reading log which needs to be returned on Friday. Please read or have your child read at least 15 minutes a day. If a student does not return their homework folder or continually doesn’t complete work during classroom time, they will take it out for recess and complete. If there is a short school week (3 days or less) there will be no homework.
Spelling test and reading test are given on Fridays; please help your child prepare for these tests. I will send out on Monday the spelling rules or skills needed to help them succeed. Please help them by going over the rules and testing them.
Please note that fighting, bullying, and stealing will not be tolerated and will be handled quickly. I will also be in contact with you thoughout the year. You know your child best, so if her/she is having difficulty at school we will work together to develop a positive behavior plan to help your child be successful.
Classwork is expected to be completed in a timely manner during the day. If it is not done on time, the student has a “Work in Progress” folder that the student will take home and complete that night. Please check your child’s backpack daily for any work that they may be needed to complete. If it is not returned, students will be missing recess and/or specials in order to complete it.
Thank you for everything you do and please do not hesitate to contact me with any question or concerns.
